(AWMB, September 2009) - The London-based international Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW), which for several decades has been offering the world-renowned qualification and title of Master of Wine (MW), has announced that Roman Horvath, the managing director of Domäne Wachau, has successfully completed the Institute’s extensive programme and achieved the prestigious MW title. Horvath is the second Austrian to achieve the MW title and become a member of the Institute. There are only 280 Masters of Wine worldwide.
The Master of Wine qualification requires a comprehensive knowledge of the international wine trade, which includes sales, distribution and marketing, as well as an extensive knowledge of the wines of the world.
Dr. Josef Schuller MW, Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine – the first “non-British” Chairman in the IMW´s 56-year history – as well as managing director of the Austrian Wine Academy, says that “Roman´s success is fantastic, and now he has ‘broken the spell’” of Austria having just one native MW title-bearer. In 1998, Schuller became the first Austrian Master of Wine.
“I am convinced that we will be congratulating even more MWs from the group of candidates from Central Europe at the Institute, “says Schuller. “And that the positioning of the Master of Wine qualification in these countries will be strengthened as well.”
Roman Horvath completed his master’s degree for tourism management in Vienna. He was the second Austrian to graduate (WSET diploma) with distiction from the Austrian Wine Academy, and he completed a course for viticulture and enology. Horvath’s education has been complemented by his experience in the restaurant trade and as a buyer of international wines for the Austrian fine wine company Wein & Co. His wine knowledge was furthered through practical training at wineries in France and Chile. Horvath has held numerous lectures and has taught many courses at the Austrian Wine Academy. Since 2005, he has been managing director of one of Austria’s leading wine producers, Domäne Wachau, where he was responsible for the highly successful quality-oriented restructuring of the winery.
Roman Horvath MW is Vintage 1969. He is married and the father of three children.
